About Us Our Community is truly an area-wide collection of neighborhoods with common ties of commerce, voting and school districts. This is a positive and distinctive attribute. Through social and economic supports, as well as political action, we can assure the stability and development of our community. Neighborhood groups and the Business Association working collaboratively with our Community Association to seek positive change should demonstrate our strength to elected officials.
The redesign of Harlem Road, the Clean-up of the Rite Aid vacant lot, the Cleveland Drive Repavement Project, the poor traffic conditions and the Kensington-Harlem Triangle area, etc are issues that require our collective efforts. The issues are broader than any one political jurisdiction. Problems such as this don't begin and end at "the city line." Therefore, we must have the savvy, internal and external resources and persistence to "work these boundaries" to assure positive outcomes on behalf of our community.
Our history began when Rite Aid wished to build a new store at the northeast corner of Harlem and Kensington. The community turned out at a key town meeting in force to let the town know we didn't want to lose landmark buildings in exchange for another big drug store. As a result of this community involvement, a task force was formed to address the larger issue of revitalizing the area of Harlem Road from approx. Kensington to Cleveland Drive. The task force has laid a lot of groundwork. They have been working with politicians from the towns of Amherst, Cheektowaga, Erie County and the State of New York to get attention and funding for this area. The task force helped to establish the Business Association in 1999, and helped to establish our Community Association in 2000.
Our meetings are usually on the 4th Tuesday of every month at the Harlem Road Community Center in Snyder. Check what Meetings are coming up for specific dates and times. Please join us! (And bring some neighbors too!)
