Dellett Family

I know very little about this family so far; only that they lived somewhere in Washington Township. The only census entry I have found so far is for 1860, although some of the other censuses I have not completed yet so they may still turn up.

According to another visitor to this site, Walter, this is originally either French or Spanish, originally spelled 'DeLlette'.

Many members of this family are buried in the cemetery that once served St. Mary of the Pines, the Catholic church that once stood just up the road from Batsto and Pleasant Mills. It has been said that the church was built by the Richards family of Batsto for his Catholic workers, but I believe a good case can be made against at least some residents of that cemetery as having resided in Batsto. The Dellet family I believe did not live at Batsto for several reasons:

  1. Several of them own both personal and real estate. Batsto was a company town and it is not likely anyone working there owned land.
  2. Samuel Tucker lived with the Delletts and worked as a store clerk, but as far as is known Batsto did not have such a man working in it's store.
  3. None of the families located near the Delletts on the census have come up in my research as Batsto residents.
These are the headstones of the Dellett family found in St. Mary's cemetery. As several of these do not appear on the census above, perhaps they are a differnet part of the family that did work at Batsto; more research is needed in this area. Another researcher has told me that he believes Manass Dellett, above, actually lived in Indian Mills (Shamong Township) at least part of his life. Part of Washington Township was taken away to form Shamong in 1852, so the Dellets may show up in both townships depending on the year. E.W. Woodward mentions a hotel outside of Indian Mills that was at that time, 1883, being run by a M. Dellet. Since a Dellet shows up on the census in 1860 in Washington Township, 8 years after the creation of Shamong township, this is not the same hotel but possibly the same person, managing a different hotel in Washington Township?

Four brothers; Alex Dillet of Cream Ridge and Lewis and Manus Dillet of asbury Park. Funeral was held on Tuesday at 2 o'clock from the Zion Methodist Church with the Rev. Albert Manus officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Anyone with information regarding this family can contact myself or visit this page, where Donald has set up a Dellett family page.
