Gudeczauskas to Gudas

Who started this mess? A little history here

My ancestors both maternal and paternal were from a country called Lithuania (A Baltic Nation just northeast of Poland).

My paternal grandparents came to the USA around 1900, married in 1903, my grandfather was George Gudeczauskas (1877-1948) and Helen Dzekevicius (1884-1953) They had 12 children!!

My maternal grandparents married in 1919 and were Joseph Svagzdys (1882-1959) and Tekla Rynshall (1891-1948). They were direct descendants of Lithuanian parents. They had 6 children.

How and why did we change the name?

Why just look at the name Gudeczauskas and Gudas. All we did to shorten the name was take the first three, and last two letters of the name Gudeczauskas, and the name "Gudas" was born.

The name was legally shortened by many in the family all at once on September 9, 1968. We did this due to the many complications involved with the longer name. i.e. legal documents were getting misspellings on them, and pronunciation was a nightmare!! Some family members did not elect to shorten their name and so the name Gudeczauskas still lives on!!

By the way Gudeczauskas was pronounced: Good-eh-chow-skiss
