The 22nd Annual Lifeguard Reunion
was held on August 6that
the home of Rick and Melissa Fair. The festivities began at 2 PM and
lasted until slightly past midnight (we are all getting older you know
... and can't quite party as heartily as we used to).
Lifeguards
of all ages (and sizes) were in attendance - lifeguards of the 60's
... lifeguards of the 70's ... lifeguards of the 80's ... lifeguards of
the 90's ... and a grand
time was had by all. The traditional opening toast "to those that can't
be
here" was given by Bob "Fuzzy" Yates and all in attendance lifted their
glasses high and responded "To Lenny!".
The toast was followed by the always entertaining nasal rendition of
God Bless America by Rich "Ort the Snort" Ortiz ... with an encore
rendition of Take Me Out to the Ball Game (and once again, Ort's nose
never left his face). Grilling, swimming, backgammon, swapping old
stories, and of course draining the keg continued on into the night.
Reunion attendees: Rick
and Melissa Fair, Bob and Linda Yates, Pete and Pat Hefferan, Rich,
Liz, and Julian Ortiz, Erik Dillenkofer, Jim Sedlock, Joy Pinkerton,
Rob Alpaugh,
Sean and Sandy Gogerty, Scott Yates, Mark Buzzelli, Tammy Yates, Hilary
Yates, Tina Foeri, Kristie Andresen, Jeff Braymeyer, Tracey
Collins, Kevin Mohr, Tom Sayles and family, and Chris Varcoe and
family.
On Sunday, August 7th, several (slightly
hungover) alumni
attended the 25th Annual Lifeguard Competition at Horseshoe Lake.
Competing teams included Roxbury, Hopatcong State Park,
Shongum
Lake, and of course the alumni team. While the teams of current guards
warmed up and practiced, the alumni team wisely conserved energy by
lounging on the beach ... which led to wins in two events ... the
swimming rescue and the tug-of-war (weight rules!). Steve "Cro"
Crimando (the father of the event) was in attendance along with Janice
Roos-Maccione, Rob " Poe" Alpaugh, and Chris Varcoe. Steve Crimando,
Tammy Yates, and
Hilary Yates pulled duty as timers and scorekeepers while Bob Yates
officiated the event ... Mark Buzzelli,
Kevin Mohr, ???, and Jeff Braymeyer made up the alumni team
with
Erik Dillenkofer assisting in the tug-of-war against Shongum Lake.
Final standings:
1st
place: Shongum Lake
2nd
place: Hopatcong State Park
3rd
place: Roxbury
