Letter to the Editor (02/29/08)Bob Lutz, Vice Chairman of General Motors dismissed global warming as a “total crock of s___”. His comments refute global warming alarmists’ scare tactics that use catastrophic forecasts based on temperature increases of a few tenths of a degree to promote irrational interventions in our lives.
Here are some examples:
1) Banning incandescent lights and replacing with mercury fluorescents will costs consumers more and create a risk of mercury contamination.2) Alternative power sources like wind and solar imposed on consumers will increase our already high cost of electricity.
3) Carbon credits advocated by politicians to offset carbon dioxide emitted by power companies could increase power bills at least 50 percent.
4) Bioenergy threatens food supply, livestock feed, and all other uses as the major driver of American agriculture and will increase the cost of food.
5) Energy efficiency initiatives will force consumers to buy energy-efficient appliances with higher costs.
6) Adopting California auto emission standards will increase the cost of automobiles by several thousand dollars.
What’s the cost/benefit for this political correctness? Lutz doesn’t care because GM will continue to make a profit with its environmentally friendly vehicles. But, the rest of us should care because our freedom is at stake. The “global planning” that imposes politically correct environmental measures will have immense economic costs to us all.
