PortfolioWest Virginia homeschoolers are required by law to provide an assessment of their child's education to their school board office by June 30 of each year.All children that are of mandatory school age (age six by September 1st of that school year to age 16) must be assessed. You have the following options: A portfolio is a collection of work that shows your child's effort, progress and growth. You must have a teacher review the portfolio and report to the county that your child's academic progress for the year is in accordance with the child's abilities. A simple form that the evaluator can use is available from the Monongalia school board office if your evaluator does not have one. (A copy of this form is usually sent out with basic homeschooling forms that the Monongalia school board sends to you to register for homeschooling.) Anyone who is a certified teacher in West Virginia or a state with a reciprocal agreement (Ohio, PA, etc.) is qualified to evaluate portfolios. It is a good idea to make contact with your evaluator early in the year as they may wish to meet with you more than once.
