Obtaining Public School TextbooksThe county boards of education are required by law in WV to provide textbooks for homeschoolers free of charge. The Monongalia Homeschoolers assembles a group order for public school texts for home schoolers in Mon County each spring. If you want textbooks for the autumn, this is the easiest way to obtain them. We have copies of the books available at our April monthly group meeting and at our May picnic (usually the third Fridays--check the calendar page at the beginning of April). Contact Carrie Savage (598-5911, evenings) or Kim Jacks (292-1629) to see a copy of available books if you are unable to attend either of the above mentioned meetings. The group order, compiled by Carrie Savage, will be sent to the school board office in June. When the books arrive at the school warehouse, Carrie will pick them up, put each family's order together, and call you to come and get your books at her home in Granville. Some of the books may arrive earlier in the summer than others, before you need them for your September school work, but please come and get your books promptly from Carrie. She does not have room to store everyone's books through the summer. Carrie also collects the textbooks that families have from the present year in May (usually at the May picnic). She will sort through these, see which ones are needed by families for the next school year, and redistribute those in June. (Our group only returns to the school board the books that none of our families need for the upcoming year.) Also, some of the books are sometimes backordered and do not arrive by the beginning of September, but Carrie will call you as soon as the books are in. If you miss this group order in May, you need to contact Debbie Mattern at the school board office (291-9210). She will probably try to refer you to Carrie Savage, but explain that you missed the homeschooling group order and need to order individually. She may ask you to check for books first at the public school your child would attend. If you are unable to find the books you need there, then the board office will order new ones. Please note that teacher's editions of books are generally not available to homeschoolers. They simply cannot afford to order the teacher's editions for us, as they are quite expensive. On occasion they have ordered one for us, particularly if it is a higher math or science text (see the homeschooling group library where we keep these from year to year). The elementary school texts, and most of the secondary texts, are easy to use without any teacher's editions, so don't be concerned that you would need them. |
