Obtaining Public School Textbooks

In WV the county boards of education are required by law to provide textbooks for home schoolers free of charge. The Monongalia Area Homeschoolers Association has a lending library of textbooks, many from the current and some from the previous curriculum. We also keep a list of the books currently in use in the public schools. A copy of this list is always available at our May picnic, so that parents can peruse this and order their texts for the coming year. The picnic is also the time when textbooks from the present year are collected. These are then sorted to see which are needed for the coming year and redistributed in the summer.

If we do not have a particular book available in the library, then the parent must contact the child's local school. Any books borrowed from the school must be returned to that school usually by the end of the school year. Should the school not have the book, you should contact Hazel Beckner at the board office (291-9210 ext 504). A book will be obtained either from another school in the county or from the publisher.

Of course you can see the list and obtain texts from our library at any time during the year, by contacting the textbook coordinator.

Please note that teacher's editions of texts are generally not available to homeschoolers. These are very expensive and the county can not afford to provide them for individual families. If you feel you really need one you can order through James & Law in Clarksburg, but for the most part the texts are very easy to use without the teacher's editions, so don't be concerned that you would need them.
