Articles from KOI-USA

During the last three years, I have written two articles that have appeared in the magazine KOI-USA.  The first article described the 'Koi Hotel' in Singapore operated by Nippon KOI.  Singapore, located in Southeastern Asia, is a 'small' city-state.  The entire land mass is a bit over 200 square miles.  'Landed property,' single family homes, are very expensive because of the shortage of land.  Most citizens live in high rise condominiums.  Because of this land shortage, koi hobbyists who live in apartments must make other arrangements to raise koi.  To support the koi hobby, a unique institution, the Koi Hotel' has risen.  To learn more about the Koi Hotel, click here.  A picture from the Koi Hotel is below.

The second article I wrote for KOI-USA was based on my experiences and reasons for upgrading the second stage of my pond's filter system which was originally a gravel upflow filter system.  Gravel as a filter media has two positive qualities, availability and low cost.  These positives do not balance out the many negatives.  As my Koi grew larger it was apparent that something had to be done.  To learn how I upgraded my filter in place, click here.

I am in the process of adding a wet-dry filter stage, sometimes called a nitrate tower, to my filter system.  When I am finished adding this stage, I will write about my experiences and add them to this site.
