LIBRARY EXPERIENCE:

Reference Librarian
Preston Library, The Virginia Military Institute
Provide general reference services, including: user access to the online catalog, assistance with an extensive number of general and specialized WWW-based databases, and other electronic and print sources.  Design and teach bibliographic instruction sessions focusing on specific subject areas and general information literacy skills.  Participate in collection development and general library planning.  

Act as a library liaison with arts and humanities departments on campus.  Work in concert with campus faculty to enhance library services and access to library holdings.   Maintain and develop reference collection in conjunction with the needs of a unique service population and the curricular needs of campus academic departments.  Design and develop innovative resources to assist students and faculty in conducting research, especially in the areas of WWW homepages and WWW database interfaces.  Interact with students, faculty and staff in organized instruction sessions and one-on-one through daily reference duties. 

Design and produce library documents, including: brochures, handouts, annotated bibliographies, in-house documentation and policy statements.  Conduct staff training on computer systems, software packages and use of the Internet.  Conduct mediated searching of computer databases for faculty and students.  Fill interlibrary loans as needed.

Responsible for user education through reference desk work in an electronically networked and culturally diverse academic environment.  Responsibilities include: student instruction in library use, research, and information-seeking skills, instruction in using electronic resources (online databases, CD-ROMs, document delivery) and printed reference sources.  Instruct students and faculty in the use of general and highly specialized online databases.  Conduct OCLC and Internet/WWW searching of other library catalogs and other information sources, and assist students with interlibrary loan requests.

Indexer/Abstracter

Create indexing and abstracting for approximately 1,000 scholarly journal articles and dissertations (in the field of counseling education) that have been added to the ERIC database.  Analytical skills include the use of a controlled vocabulary, descriptive indexing skills, the use of cataloging rules and selecting articles to be indexed.  Utilize excellent writing ability and the ability to meet assigned deadlines.
