Bride's Boxes

Bride's Boxes

In the eighteenth century, boxes made of wood shavings, usually oval in shape, were given as wedding presents. There were many centers for the painting of these boxes; but it is generally believed that most of them came from central or lower Germany. In America they arrived with ear ly German settlers to Pennsylvania holding the keepsakes of new brides as they sailed to their new homes.

Many of the boxes show an elaborately dressed eighteenth-century couple on their lids. A few of the finer boxes were dated. Sometimes an inscription or sentimental message was included. Flowers and fruit completed the decoration – full blown roses, pomegranates and tulips among the favorite.

Pam has been decorating Bride's Boxes for special brides since 1996. If you are looking for a unique, one of a kind bridal shower or wedding gift, consider a personally decorated reproduction of a Pennsylvania Bride's Box.

All boxes are of quality bentwood, handmade in Maine. They are decorated to order with historically adapted patterns using acrylic paints. Pictures of previously painted boxes are available. Prices include shipping and handling.

A 50% deposit (check or money order only) is required at time of order. The remaining 50% is due at time of shipping. Allow a minimum of 3 months for delivery.
