This type of shell, an olive, is found all along the North Carolina coast.  I walked along the shore one day taking close-up "portraits" of the little guys with my camera.   The background is a spatter technique, using an old toothbrush and thinned watercolor.  The shell is masked off until the background is done.  This is a miniature-size painting.
